The oceans are the most important lungs of our planet.
It is estimated that the oceans create between 50% and 80% of the oxygen we breathe; they also absorb 1/3 of the carbon dioxide we release onto the atmosphere. The data reinforce how important it is to preserve the oceans.
World Ocean Day
Tuesday, June 8th is World Ocean Day, instituted in 2008, and this year’s theme is “Life & Livelihoods”.
The goal is to emphasise the vital role oceans play for humanity and the need for sustainable interaction that does not compromise the benefits they afford us.
Speaking specifically about the interaction between the needs of daily life and respect for the environment, we must pose the question: “how do my consumption habit contribute to safekeeping nature?” The answer is quite simple – it is not necessary to stop consuming, but to start doing it more responsibly, choosing companies that produce in a smart way.
Chopard and the Journey to Sustainable Luxury
Chopard, world renown for their high jewellery and watches, is one of the first luxury brands to undertake the Journey towards sustainability.
It started in 2013 and the objective was to preserve the environment, from which the raw materials used in their production were extracted. This initiative is today a model of inspiration for other brands in the industry and it relies on four pillars: Responsible sourcing of raw materials, management of the environment, investment in personnel, commitment and awareness.
Chopard is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) since 2010 which is an international entity committed to guaranteeing responsible business practices. In 2018 it launched “Ethical Gold”, an innovative process by which watches and jewellery are produced using only two types of traceable gold:
- Gold that has been extracted in smaller scale from fair trade artisanal mines members of the Swiss Better Gold Association (SBGA), Fairmined and Fairtrade
- Gold that meets the standards set forth by RJC’s Chain of Custody, whose goal is to provide responsibly sourced materials for the production of jewellery.
The journey towards sustainable luxury is very articulated and we invite you to discover it here.

Happy Ocean, on the Diamond Wave
On the occasion of World Oceans Day, Chopard introduces Happy Ocean, a women’s diving watch inspired by the azure waters of the South Seas.
A glamorous blue-grey dial engraved with wave detail evokes the World Oceans Day theme. Moving diamonds, which made the Happy Sport collection famous, “float” over the dial. The 40 mm case in ethical gold and stainless steel houses an automatic movement and has a matching calfskin strap.
